Great discussion and road run in this 1990 Lamborghini LM002 video.
Lamborghini isn’t really thought of as a manufacturer of military type vehicles, let alone ones intended for desert use.
Remember though Lamborghini originally built tractors, then went into cars after a ‘discussion’ with Enzo Ferrari over the reliability of his Ferrari’s, in particular the clutch, which in the Ferraris that Lamborghini owned never lasted very long.
The end result of this ‘discussion’ was Lamborghini started building cars of a type to compete directly with Ferrari.
Lamborghini’s first attempt at a military style vehicle was the Cheetah in 1977 powered by a mid mounted Chrysler V8 but this had many handling problems
Consequently the LM was a totally a new design with front mount engine, a 5.2L V12 450hp. An engine which 25 years ago would have been one of the most powerful on the road.
If this wasnt enough there was the option of the 7.2L engine. I can remember at the time these vehicles being called the fastest car in the desert, nicknamed the Rambo Lambo they were certainly built to go fast on sand.
This one in the video still has the original Pirelli run flat tires, and today these tires will cost a massive $4300 each. Ouch!
Original cost of the LM in 1990 was $120,000 if powered by a 5.2L V12 450hp engine.
Now a noble collectors vehicle and a classic you need a big checkbook to drive it any distance.
While this vehicle is portrayed as a military design I think Lamborghini was also seriously considering that the vehicle could be in demand in the oil industry because while designed as a military vehicle in mind it is much more a SUV.
Interesting at the time is there was quite a lot of controversy with makers of Hummer as to who was copying who at the time.
The LM has now been replaced by the Lamborghini Urus, a concept type SUV powered by a twin turbo V8
With a 290 litre gas tank Jay must have used quite a bit if this on his road run. But what a great exhaust sound.
